Great idea – a portable planter
My name is Rob Stayt and I live on a farm at Underberg KZN. I am a pensioner, a RASKI, and I run a small factory of my own called THE LITTLE BOX FACTORY. I manufacture Rustic Wooden Boxes of all sorts.
Let the slideshow run, it will cycle through a small selection of Rob’s handmade boxes -
All my boxes are made of locally grown pine and are rough sawn. They are nailed and glued together. I leave them with a plain wood finish so the customer may varnish or paint them to their own desires. I can manufacture Rustic boxes to customer’s requirements within the limits of 400mm. Quantity depends on the little factory’s capacity to make them
I do hope you may be interested in my products. If so, let me know the required dimensions and I can work up samples for you.

I replied to Rob –
A few years ago I made a very ‘rustic’ bird feeder with a rough wood base and low sides, plus 3 or 4 long nails driven through the base on which to impale fruit. Many of us love the amazing diversity of bird life (we have recorded over 80 different birds in our garden in just 9 years) and we want to encourage birds to visit.

That’s great Peter. We have masses of birdlife here on the farm and no traffic noises. In fact when the tractors go past the house it is an event. We rush out to watch them and to greet the drivers! I have made lots of bird feeders and nesting boxes.
I am trying to get myself around the building of six owl boxes for the farm. Owls help with keeping rodents at bay and do a splendid job at it. Keeps the cats unemployed!
I have, somewhere among my files, plans for building squirrel feeders. Needless to say I have yet to embark on such a project.
A garden without birds is not a garden at all. We have dozens of storks in the fields nearby and ducks, geese, hoopoes (not too sure of the spelling right now as my copy of Robert’s Birds is not to hand) and all sorts.
We have a vulture restaurant on the farm next door, crowned cranes visit, toppies, franklin and the best of all – amur falcons, alias red footed kestrels. The falcons travel from Siberia (without visas mind you) to here every year and we Underbergers are very proud of them…
Please note that delivery is for the account of the purchaser. At present delivery is free to Underberg and Himeville. Arrangements can presently be made for products to be delivered to Howick and Pietermaritzburg. Products may also be collected at the factory;, please phone for directions.
Ed: so there you go folks, speak to Rob.

Hi Rob. I can see your boxes in high demand for people to use as planters in smallish gardens, flats etc.Easy to pop in a plastic liner and soil or just pop in the plants in their little black bags – allows for ringing the changes. Thanks Rob.
